Reflection Review coming in Sea Kayaker Magazine December 2011 Issue
The Reflection is a playful multipurpose craft that will excel where control is the primary goal, be it in wind, currents, waves, chop, obstacles, explorations, instructional or teaching situations.
The Reflection project started out as a custom personal design for the different kinds of kayaking that I do (Reg Lake). That would be a lot of poking around and photography, moving water like Deception Pass, surfing like Hobuck, Crescent beach, boat wakes, wind waves, also standing waves on the rivers or tide races like Skookumchuck. Big enough to haul the camping essentials. Yet compact enough for playing in the arches, tunnels and caves, etc., Light and strong are important to me: light for independence getting to the water and on portages, strong for dependability. And lastly I want a kayak that is easily controlled and has no surprises when running selected whitewater rivers.

An email from a customer who spent some time choosing between an Illusion or a Reflection. His choice this time was the Illusion.
"OK. So it turned out to be the Illusion. You still gonna talk to me Reg? Yeah, I love the Reflection, too, but I can only buy one. For now. Thanks to all for taking the time and effort to enable my addiction...
I've been thinking and came up with a sound bite. Sterlings Kayaks........The shape skis of the kayak industry. OK. Corny and maybe some of your paddlers don't know that we were locked for years in the tyranny of traditional skis (short ski era barely counted and didn't contribute anything meaningful). We have, likewise, been limited by designs that defined what was assumed as possible. No more.
.... You know what's interesting? When I told some folks that I was planning to buy a boat from you at retail they couldn't understand it. "Jon's lost his mind. He's paying retail". I have never paid retail and always been able to prodeal what I needed. It was a hurdle for me to get past but I get it and they don't. The only guy who doesn't question my sanity is my trip partner, Dave, who paddled the Grand Illusion at Point Defiance. He gets it ... really looking forward to joining the family. I think I can help spread the word. Jon "
Welcome to our family Jon............we appreciate the analogy to the ski industry breaking into a new era in ski design and performance, a similar breakthrough is our goal in designing our kayaks for pure performance.

I had the opportunity to paddle Christian's two kayaks both his Grand Illusion and his Ice Cap I was impressed with the Ice Caps speed stability and turning ability I was a little leery to paddle it because of it's19'' width but the stability was remarkable a joy to paddle and the Grand Illusion is nothing short of superb it does stuff no other boats do and I have had the opportunity to paddle lots of other kayaks thanks for doing such a remarkable job Roy

70 years young and loving her Illusion |
| Dear Sterling,
My name is Jacqui Bostrom. I met you very briefly at a Portland Kayak
Demo day last April or May. I was completely taken by your Illusion
but couldn't demo it until later. So impressed was I,that I bought
your lightest version for my 70th birthday. I know the kayak is
designed for kayakers that will do way more then I do. I have however
kayaked for about 9 years, I always
thought my kayak was just fine until I tried the Illusion. I always
paddle with people 10-15 years younger than I and have managed to do
just fine but with the Illusion I fly ahead and constantly have to
wait. One stroke and you are at 4.5 miles a little effort at 6. I
was always very nervous in following seas and side seas, now I am
not. I can surf the waves while my friends stay close to shore.
I find the handling of your boat phenomenal. It turns so well, the
bracing is easy and I imagine should I ever want to roll which I do
not, that too, would be easy.
I take an 8 day camping trip to the West or East Coast of Vancouver
Island every year with my friends and the only complaint I would have
is that the packing for that many days is tight, but who cares. I
kayak every week around Portland or Puget Sound and just finished a
river trip that was at the edge of the kind of river a kayak should be
on. Unfortunately I cracked the gel-coat giving Mike something to
do. One does have to be more careful I am afraid.
When I decided to buy the Illusion I thought maybe it would be
somewhat wasted on me given that I am not an open ocean paddler or a
surfer but it has made we into a way better and more secure paddler
than I was before. I have so much fun when I go out. Of course it is
always fun when you turn 70 to be able to keep up with the 50 year
olds and sometimes surpass them at that.
So the point of all this is to tell you what a great boat you designed
and to let you know that you are never to old to have the best .Thanks for
making my paddling days so much fun.
Best,
Jacqui

Hobuck Hoedown Paddle Surf Festival: Part 2
Sea Kayak Surf Comp 1st Place
When I found out there was a sea kayak division in the surf contest at the Hobuck Hoedown, I knew exactly who to call: Sterling Donalson, the legendary kayak designer and builder who’s helped Heather and I build, fix, modify, tweak, re-design and win races in pretty much every boat we’ve owned since we moved to B’ham in ’03.
Sterling’s business these past couple years has shifted heavily toward a growing fleet of extremely popular and well-received British-style, expedition/coastal exploration boats.
I raced one of these boats, the Grand Illusion (GI), in last year’s Deception Pass Dash to see how it stacked up against other designs in the sea kayak class. The boat moves so easily through the water, despite having enough rocker to surf and stay on top of the biggest seas I’d care to encounter, that I easily won the division. So it was a natural choice for me to take the same boat to Hobuck and spend a few days playing with it in its “stomping grounds” – the surf zone.
The waves at the Hoedown were waist-to-head high for 3 days in a row, just perfect for folks like us who only get out in that kind of water MAYBE once a year. With my helmet strapped on and sprayskirt fit tight, I cruised out into and through the impact zone as if it were all green water. Even with a wave breaking right before I reached it didn’t prevent the GI from lifting right over it and dropping me cleanly on the safe side to keep heading out. I had a few good ones stop my momentum, but I never got tumbled or pushed back toward shore – unless I intentionally back-surfed, (more on that in a minute!)
When I’d cleared the impact zone, I found the fastest way to turn the GI around was to lift one knee, stroke on the opposite side, and the boat just tracked around like it was on a rail. It spins with alternating sweep strokes, too, but that forward track-around is too cool. And when I was facing back in, as a swell reached me it was a quick two strokes and I was surfing.
There is nothing in all of paddle sports, in my humble opinion, that equals the feeling of that moment you know you’ve caught a wave, and the ride is on! It’s a mixture of commitment, thrill, joy, a little uneasiness for good measure (at least for the first few waves), and pure stoke!
The GI just carried me so sweetly over the green wave face every time. I’d reach a blade and lean my torso way out toward the wave face to carve a turn, looking straight down the line as it reached top speed, and as that first pitch of whitewater spilled over the top.
Then an avalanche of froth dumps down and the sidesurf is on! The GI is as comfortable heading at speed toward shore in a full sidesurf as it is ripping across the green faces. A little more practice and I’ll be throwing window-shades in the bigger piles (maybe next year) but for this sesh I was happy just bouncing along feeling solid and thinking about my next take-off.
If there’s an area the GI really blew my mind, it was on the back-surfs. On maybe a dozen occasions I’d be paddling slowly back out through the lineup when a nice wave was right in front of me, so I’d just throw a few backstrokes and the ride was instantly on. Each time I wondered if I’d pearl, but that stern stayed so sweetly on top and even let me carve some turns before peeling sideways and starting the sidesurf. It was AWESOME fun.
And it helped me one-up the other boys in the sea kayak division of the surf contest on Sunday. That was my first time at competing in the surf, but I’m hooked. It’s like the anti-competition: you just go out there and ride, and let some folks on shore critique and score what you are or aren’t doing without worrying about how you’re ranking or who else is doing what. Win, lose or draw, I loved it, and I’ll be back next year for more!
Thanks, Sterling, for a great boat, and once again for helping us get out on the water in style!

Hi Sterling:
I wanted to catch up with you now that I've had time to put the GI
through its paces. It had its maiden voyage at the Golden Gate Sea
Kayak Symposium, where it garnered a lot of interest. The first day
featured of 40 to 50 mph squalls and lots of tide race action at
Yellow Bluff. I was a bit nervous since it was the first time with my
butt in the boat, but it handled it all with ease. Since then I've
been out at Trinidad several times in fairly intense conditions, with
swell anywhere from 12 to 18 feet with long periods. My conclusion?
It's a magic boat. Somehow you've managed to build a craft that is
crazy maneuverable, unfazed by wind and so stable in rough conditions
that I have to remind myself not to be stupid. I'm afraid I'll forget
how to brace since I so seldom have to do so. Thanks for a beautiful
boat, Sterling......
The boat amazes me. Talk to you soon.

Skeel (aft central retractable skeg with kink free cable design)
We have designed a new skeg "Skeel" with Reg Lake.
It has addressed age-old skeg problems: Leakage in skeg area
-Debris clogging the skeg and making it inoperable. It works great come and give it a test paddle.

Customer note "quiet Kayaks great for observing wildlife, photography & filming." |
Hi Sterling,
When talking to you today, I forgot to mention one trait of your
kayaks is the fact that there isn't much hull slap and noise when
paddling them - in all conditions. After paddling several kayaks and experiencing the incredible hull slap you have to put up
with, it got me thinking more about hull noise in
relationship to the IceKap and Illusion. Most boats create some hull
noise as they move up and down, especially in going out against
incoming swells, wind waves and surf. Your design seems to be the quietest I've paddled and I've paddled quite a few of them. In
fact, it would be a great selling point to those who are into viewing
and photographing wild life and marine life as you can really
quietly, sneak up on birds and other forms of wildlife in your kayaks
- not to mention the solitude they provide the paddler. Something
that shouldn't go without mentioning.

John Day pictured in his new Illusion International Orange with White Side Wave. |
My name is John Day, I'm an A.C.A. Sea Kayak instructor living on the Southern Oregon Coast. For the past four years I have paddled the Southern Oregon and Northern California Coast in all conditions both alone and with a small group of paddlers with similar skills.
I've tried many kayaks and, until recently, my all around boat of choice was the Mariner Coaster. For over a year now I have been using Sterling Donalson's Icekap and have found it to be an excellent all around kayak in the open ocean environment.
Recently, I have been paddling Sterling's Illusion and have found it to be the ultimate kayak
for all types of open ocean use. Sterling's kayaks have a lot of rocker making them extremely maneuverable. The surprise being that they also track extremely well! Sterling makes kayaks that are light, strong, quick to turn, track well even without a skeg and are at home in open ocean, rock gardens, surf, wind, current - all types of conditions.
You can even fill the Illusion full of water and it's
still stable and maneuverable!! (a fact discovered by customers)
In the surf the Illusion gets to speed quickly allowing you to catch waves. ...Once on a wave, it surfs straight and true. Being broached by big waves is a joy in this boat as it is the most forgiving kayak I've used in the surf zone. Because of it's design (rocker and volume) Sterling's kayaks punch outthrough the surf with less effort than other kayaks. The Illusion does not weather cock and is easy to turn into or away from the wind. Going with the wind and following seas does not interfere with this kayak's performance. My Illusion has no skeg and I recently paddled
in 12 foot swells, 20 mph winds creating 4 foot wind waves and the kayak took it all in stride!
Owning a kayak made by Sterling makes one look forward to paddling like no other kayak I've used.
Light, strong, fast, playful, maneuverable and stable, what ever else in this world could you ask of your kayak??

Why buy Strong-Lite Construction? |
Enjoying an almost Advil-free paddle! |
from Customer L. Coffey--
Hi Sterling, I want to tell you how much I'm enjoying my Ice Kap. It handles so beautifully, turns on a thought and is so comfortable that
I've been able to reduce my per-trip Advil consumption to almost nothing.
I'm also surprised at how stable the kayak feels; I'd expected it to be a bit tippy and was amazed to find how solid it feels when I'm not paddling. All in all, it's a joy to be in....Thank you again for making such a beautiful craft.
All the best L. Coffey |
